Earth and Marine Sciences has several discrete storm drain
systems. The system pictured here is one of four of this type.
The inlet is pictured on the left. From there it is piped to a buried
perforated pipe on a gentle slope. The pipe is set in a bed of
coarse gravel and covered by rocks (shown in the photo on the
right). The perforated pipe allows collected water to be dispersed
in a gentle trickle across the hillside and encourages infiltration to
the soil. The drainage system is equipped with an overflow box,
turquoise circle in middle of photo, to provide relief should the system
become overwhelmed by a large storm or clogged due to debris
entering the system. The drainage system is also equipped with
a cleanout pipe, see turquoise arrow and label at bottom of photo,
for removal of leaf litter or other debris that would hamper
drainage through the perforated pipe.
