Earth and Marine Sciences has several discrete storm drain
systems. The particular system pictured here is shared with
Natural Sciences 2 and with the Center for Adaptive Optics.
As shown here, storm water collecting in any of the various
inlets along the north side of the building is piped to a detention
basin below the Center for Adaptive Optics. The detention basin
itself is a rock lined basin with three outflow boxes set at
varying elevations. As the water level in the basin rises to the
top of the lowest outflow box water flows into the box and
through piping which daylights south of Steinhart Way. During
larger storms, the water level will rise to the level of the
second and third outflow boxes, increasing the discharge rate
to the daylight point in the channel on the south side of
Steinhart Way.
